The new Active Handicap Symbol is gaining traction among supporters who want to show people with disabilities as a group that is dynamic and active, not static or sedentary.
Some disability organizations are saying it solely represents disabled persons wheelchair-bound who are athletic and mobile, rather than an encompassing spectrum of physical disabilities.
Many believe the old symbol has gone ignored by the able-bodied community, who seem to park in these spaces for convenience.
Having a new symbol may catch the general public’s attention. The Active Handicap Symbol exemplifies a progressive attitude, it also relays a message to everyone that all handicaps are not true disabilities.
The Museum of Modern Art in New York City had the Active Handicap Symbol on display and various cities around the globe have also adopted the symbol.
